Grilled Cheese prohibits child sexual abuse and exploitation absolutely. There is no context in which it is permitted here, no appeal that restores an account removed for it, and no part of this service intended to carry it. This page is our published standard, effective 10 September 2026.
What is prohibited
Child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) covers, without limitation:
-
Child sexual abuse material (CSAM): any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving a minor, and any content that solicits, advertises, links to or offers to trade it.
-
Sexualisation of minors: content that sexualises a person under 18, whether photographic, drawn, rendered, computer-generated or written, and whether or not the depicted person exists.
-
Grooming: building a relationship with a minor, or with someone who represents themselves as a minor, in order to sexually exploit them.
-
Sextortion: threatening to release intimate imagery of a minor to obtain further imagery, money, or anything else.
-
Trafficking and solicitation: offering, arranging or seeking sexual contact with a minor.
-
Minor-attracted content and communities: normalising, promoting or seeking sexual interest in minors, including coded language used to signal it.
This standard applies to everything on Grilled Cheese: posts, replies, media, profiles, display names, handles, bios, links, and encrypted conversations insofar as they are reported to us.
Reporting it
In the app. Every post and every account carries a report control. Choose Child safety, then the option that fits: child sexual abuse material, grooming, or another child-safety concern. Reports in this category are prioritised above every other kind of report we receive and are not held behind a queue.
By email. [email protected], if you cannot use the in-app control or are not a Grilled Cheese user. Please include a link or handle.
To authorities directly. In the United States, reports can be made to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678. Outside the United States, contact your national hotline or law enforcement. If a child is in immediate danger, contact emergency services first. Reporting to us is never a substitute for reporting to authorities, and you do not need to wait for us before doing so.
What we do about it
-
Remove. Violating content is taken down.
-
Terminate. The account is removed, not suspended. This applies to every identity on the account, and we act on the account rather than the individual post.
-
Preserve. We retain the evidence and the associated account records for as long as required to support a report and any investigation that follows, even where our ordinary retention would have deleted them. This is one of the narrow cases where a deletion request does not erase everything: see Delete your account.
-
Report. We report apparent child sexual abuse material to NCMEC, and cooperate with valid legal process from law enforcement.
-
Do not restore. There is no appeal path that returns an account removed under this standard.
Prevention
-
Accounts are for people aged 13 and over, and some jurisdictions set a higher floor. We collect a birthday at signup and enforce the applicable minimum.
-
We ingest labels from external moderation services, including Bluesky’s, and apply them to federated content we display.
-
Reports in this category carry the highest severity weight in our triage, which places them at the top of the review queue regardless of how new or how widely seen the content is.
-
Encrypted conversations are end-to-end encrypted and we cannot read them. We act on what is reported to us from inside a conversation, and on the account behind it.
A federated network
Grilled Cheese federates with other servers over ATProto and ActivityPub. Content from elsewhere reaches us and our content reaches elsewhere. Two consequences worth stating plainly:
-
We remove violating remote content from our service and block the accounts and servers responsible, but we cannot delete content from a server we do not run. Where we can identify the origin we report it to the operator and to authorities.
-
Content that has already federated away from us is beyond our reach to recall, which is why removal here is accompanied by reporting rather than instead of it.
